What is the full form of ATM?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Automated Teller Machine

Detailed Solution

ATM stands for "Automated Teller Machine". (A "teller" is a bank employee who handles cash deposits and withdrawals at the counter.)

About ATMs:

  • An ATM is an electronic machine that allows bank customers to carry out banking transactions without visiting a branch or a teller.
  • Customers use a debit card or credit card and a Personal Identification Number (PIN), or a UPI QR code in newer machines, to access their accounts.
  • Common services include withdrawing cash, checking the account balance, getting a mini statement, changing the PIN and, at some machines, depositing cash.

History:

The world's first cash machine was installed by Barclays Bank at its Enfield branch in north London on 27 June 1967. It was invented by John Shepherd-Barron. It used paper cheques treated with a radioactive substance, not plastic cards.

India's first ATM was installed by HSBC (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation) in Mumbai in 1987.

ATMs in India:

India has more than 2.5 lakh ATMs.

"White Label ATMs" (WLAs) are ATMs owned and operated by non-bank companies, allowed by the RBI since 2012. The first one was opened in 2013 at Chandrapur, Maharashtra.

The National Financial Switch (NFS), run by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), connects the ATMs of different banks, so customers can use any bank's ATM.

The RBI allows a certain number of free ATM transactions every month; after that, banks may charge a fee.

"Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal" (ICCW) using UPI was introduced in 2022-23.

"Micro ATMs" are hand-held devices used by business correspondents in villages.

Related terms:

  • PIN: Personal Identification Number.
  • NPCI: National Payments Corporation of India (2008).
  • UPI: Unified Payments Interface (2016).
  • POS: Point of Sale.
  • EMV: Europay, Mastercard and Visa (chip card standard).
  • RuPay: India's domestic card payment network (2012), run by NPCI.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗"Automatic Transaction Machine" is not the correct full form.
  • ✗"Any Time Money" is a popular but incorrect expansion.
  • ✗"Automated Transfer Mechanism" is not a real term.

Quick tip

Remember: ATM = Automated Teller Machine (first by Barclays, London, 1967, invented by John Shepherd-Barron; first in India by HSBC, Mumbai, 1987); White Label ATMs = non-bank (2012); NFS = run by NPCI.
