Answer: Option B — All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
Detailed Solution
AIADMK stands for the "All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam", a major political party of Tamil Nadu.
Meaning of the name:
"Anna" refers to C. N. Annadurai (popularly called "Anna", meaning elder brother), the founder of the DMK and the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from a Dravidian party (1967-1969).
"Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam" means "Dravidian Progress Federation".
About the AIADMK:
It was founded on 17 October 1972 by the film star M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), after he was expelled from the DMK by M. Karunanidhi.
It was first called "Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam" (ADMK); "All India" was added in 1976.
Its symbol is "two leaves".
MGR was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 until his death in 1987. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1988.
After MGR, J. Jayalalithaa ("Amma") led the party and was Chief Minister several times between 1991 and 2016. She died in office in December 2016.
The party is now led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) as General Secretary.
The Dravidian movement:
It was started by E. V. Ramasamy ("Periyar"), who founded the "Self-Respect Movement" (1925) and the "Dravidar Kazhagam" (DK) in 1944.
- N. Annadurai broke away from the DK and founded the "Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam" (DMK) in 1949.
The DMK and the AIADMK have alternated in power in Tamil Nadu since 1967.
- K. Stalin, son of Karunanidhi, became DMK President in 2018 and Chief Minister in 2021.
Why not the other options?
- ✗"Andhra" is incorrect; the party is named after Annadurai.
- ✗"Dravidar Mahila" is incorrect.
- ✗Good to know
- ✗"Adi Dravida" is incorrect.
Quick tip
Remember: AIADMK = All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (founded 1972 by MGR; "Anna" = C. N. Annadurai; symbol two leaves); DMK = 1949 (Annadurai); DK = 1944 (Periyar).
