Answer: Option D — Rice
Detailed Solution
"Aus", "Aman" and "Boro" are the three main seasonal rice crops of eastern India, especially West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Bihar, and also of Bangladesh.
The three rice seasons:
Aus (autumn rice): sown in the pre-monsoon months (about April-May) and harvested in about July-August. It is mostly rain-fed and has a short duration.
Aman (winter rice): sown or transplanted during the monsoon (about June-July) and harvested in about November-December. It is the main rice crop of the region and covers the largest area.
Boro (summer rice): sown in winter (about November-January) and harvested in about April-May. It depends on irrigation, such as tube wells, and usually gives high yields.
Why there are three crops:
- Eastern India has fertile alluvial soil, high rainfall, many rivers and low-lying lands that stay wet for long periods.
- With irrigation, farmers can grow rice in more than one season on the same land.
Rice in India:
- India is the world's second-largest producer of rice after China, and the world's largest exporter of rice.
- West Bengal is the largest rice-producing state in India.
- Rice is mainly a kharif crop, needing high temperature (above about 25 degrees Celsius) and high rainfall (above about 100 cm).
- In Kerala, rice is grown below sea level at Kuttanad, called the "Rice Bowl of Kerala".
Indian crop seasons in general:
- Kharif: sown with the monsoon (June-July), harvested in September-October; examples include rice, maize, cotton and soybean.
- Rabi: sown in winter (October-December), harvested in spring (March-April); examples include wheat, barley, mustard and gram.
- Zaid: a short summer season between rabi and kharif; examples include watermelon, cucumber and fodder crops.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Wheat is a rabi crop and does not have aus, aman and boro varieties.
- ✗Jute is a fibre crop of the same region but has no such seasonal names.
- ✗Tea is a plantation crop.
Quick tip
Remember: Aus (autumn), Aman (winter, main crop) and Boro (summer, irrigated) = rice crops of eastern India and Bangladesh; largest rice producer = West Bengal; Kuttanad = "Rice Bowl of Kerala".
