Answer: Option B — Gujarat
Detailed Solution
The Banni buffalo is a breed of water buffalo mainly reared in the Banni grasslands of the Kutch district of Gujarat.
About the Banni buffalo:
- It is named after the Banni grasslands, one of the largest tropical grasslands in Asia, located on the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch.
- It is reared mainly by the Maldhari community, traditional pastoralists who move with their herds.
- It is well adapted to the harsh climate of Kutch, with extreme heat, low rainfall, water scarcity and saline soil.
- A special feature of the Banni buffalo is that it grazes mainly at night, when it is cooler, and returns to the village in the morning to be milked.
- It gives a good yield of milk, even under difficult conditions, and is known for its hardiness and disease resistance.
- It has distinctive double-coiled horns that curve upwards.
In 2010, it was registered as the 11th recognised buffalo breed of India by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal. It was the first buffalo breed from Gujarat's Kutch to be recognised in this way.
Its milk is used to make dairy products, and many families depend on it for their livelihood.
