Detailed Solution

The ICAR-Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research (DRMR) is located at Sewar, Bharatpur, Rajasthan.

About the DRMR:

  • It was established in 1993 as the "National Research Centre on Rapeseed-Mustard" and was upgraded to a Directorate in 2009.
  • It works under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • It is the main national centre for research on rapeseed and mustard crops.
  • It develops high-yielding varieties that are resistant to diseases, pests, heat, frost and drought, and varieties with low erucic acid and glucosinolates, for healthier oil and better animal feed.
  • It coordinates research through the All India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed-Mustard.

About rapeseed and mustard in India:

  • They are among the most important oilseed crops in India, after soybean and groundnut.
  • They are rabi (winter) crops, sown in October-November and harvested in February-March.
  • Rajasthan is the largest producer of rapeseed and mustard, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal.
  • Mustard oil is a popular cooking oil in north and east India, and mustard seeds and leaves ("sarson ka saag") are used in food.
  • The yellow flowers of mustard fields are a common sight in north India in winter.

In 2022, the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) approved the environmental release of genetically modified mustard "DMH-11" (Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11), developed at the University of Delhi. The matter was referred to the Supreme Court.

About Bharatpur:

  • It is famous for the Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985) and Ramsar site, known for migratory birds, including (formerly) the Siberian crane.
  • The Lohagarh Fort ("Iron Fort") was built by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal.

Other oilseed research institutes:

  • Directorate of Groundnut Research: Junagadh, Gujarat.
  • Indian Institute of Soybean Research: Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research: Hyderabad.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Hisar has the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes and the Haryana Agricultural University.
  • ✗Kanpur has the Indian Institute of Pulses Research.
  • ✗Ludhiana has the Punjab Agricultural University.

Quick tip

Remember: Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research = Bharatpur, Rajasthan (1993); Rajasthan = largest mustard producer (rabi crop); GM mustard DMH-11 approved by GEAC 2022; pulses institute = Kanpur.
