Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Junagadh, Gujarat

Detailed Solution

The ICAR-Directorate of Groundnut Research (DGR) is located at Junagadh, in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat.

About the Directorate of Groundnut Research:

  • It was established in 1979 as the "National Research Centre for Groundnut" (NRCG) and was upgraded to a Directorate in 2009.
  • It works under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • It is the main national centre for research on groundnut (peanut).

It develops high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties of groundnut, studies crop management, pest and disease control and the quality of groundnut, and coordinates research across India through the All India Coordinated Research Project on Groundnut.

About groundnut in India:

  • India is one of the largest producers of groundnut in the world, after China.
  • Gujarat is the largest producer of groundnut in India, followed by Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Groundnut is grown mainly as a kharif crop, in sandy loam and black soils.
  • It is a leguminous crop, so it fixes nitrogen in the soil.

Its seeds are rich in oil (about 45-50 per cent) and protein. Groundnut is called the "king of oilseeds".

Groundnut oil is one of the main cooking oils in India, especially in Gujarat.

About oilseeds in India:

  • The nine main oilseeds are groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, soybean, sunflower, sesame, safflower, niger, castor and linseed.
  • India imports a large share of its edible oil, mainly palm oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil.
  • The "Yellow Revolution" refers to the increase in oilseed production after the Technology Mission on Oilseeds was launched in 1986.
  • In 2024, the government launched the "National Mission on Edible Oils-Oilseeds" (NMEO-Oilseeds) to make India self-reliant in edible oils.

Other ICAR oilseed institutes:

  • Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research: Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
  • Indian Institute of Soybean Research: Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research: Hyderabad, Telangana.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Anand has the National Dairy Development Board and Amul.
  • ✗Hyderabad has the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research.
  • ✗Anantapur is a major groundnut-growing district, but not the location of the Directorate.

Quick tip

Remember: Directorate of Groundnut Research = Junagadh, Gujarat (1979 as NRCG); Gujarat = largest groundnut producer; mustard = Bharatpur; soybean = Indore; oilseeds institute = Hyderabad.
