Answer: Option A — Tamil Nadu Women in Agriculture
Detailed Solution
TANWA stands for "Tamil Nadu Women in Agriculture", a project to train women farmers in modern agricultural practices.
About TANWA:
- It was started in 1986 in Tamil Nadu.
- It was implemented with financial assistance from DANIDA (the Danish International Development Agency, the development aid agency of Denmark).
- It was implemented by the Tamil Nadu Department of Agriculture, with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) as a partner.
- Its aim was to train farm women in the latest agricultural technologies, as women do a large share of farm work but had little access to training and extension services.
Its features:
- Selected farm women were trained in modern techniques, such as improved crop varieties, seed treatment, use of fertilisers and pesticides, integrated pest management, post-harvest technology and food processing.
- These trained women then trained other women in their villages (a "training of trainers" approach).
- Farm women's groups ("Farm Women's Groups") were formed to share knowledge, start small businesses and get credit.
- Similar DANIDA-assisted women-in-agriculture projects were later taken up in other states, such as Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
Importance of women in Indian agriculture:
- According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey, about three-quarters of rural working women are engaged in agriculture.
- Women carry out many farm activities, such as sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest work and animal husbandry, but own only a small share of agricultural land.
- The term "feminisation of agriculture" describes the growing share of women in farm work, as men migrate to cities.
Related programmes and days:
- "Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana" (MKSP, 2011): under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, to empower women farmers.
- At least 30 per cent of funds under several agricultural schemes are earmarked for women farmers.
- "Mahila Kisan Diwas" (Women Farmers' Day): observed in India on 15 October, which is also the "International Day of Rural Women" (UN).
- "Namo Drone Didi" (2023): provides drones to women's self-help groups for agricultural services.
- ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture (CIWA): Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Why not the other options?
- ✗"Tamil Nadu Water Authority" is not the correct expansion.
- ✗"Tamil Nadu Women's Association" is not the correct expansion.
- ✗"Tamil Nadu Agricultural Welfare Agency" is not the correct expansion.
