Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Assam

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala (1903-1951) was a playwright, poet, songwriter, composer, filmmaker and freedom fighter of Assam. He is popularly known as "Rupkonwar", which means "the prince of beauty", in recognition of his great contribution to Assamese art and culture.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born in Tamulbari, in the Dibrugarh district of Assam, into a wealthy family of Marwari origin that had settled in Assam. He studied in Kolkata and Edinburgh and also spent time at a film studio in Germany, where he learnt about filmmaking. He returned to Assam and devoted himself to literature, music, theatre and cinema. In 1935, he made "Joymoti", the first Assamese film, based on the story of Joymoti Konwari, a brave princess of the Ahom kingdom. He wrote and composed hundreds of songs, called "Jyoti Sangeet", which are still sung in Assam. He also wrote plays, such as "Karengar Ligiri" and "Rupalim", and was an active participant in the freedom movement, for which he was imprisoned by the British. The day of his death, 17 January, is celebrated in Assam as "Silpi Divas" (Artists' Day).

Other famous cultural figures of Assam include Bhupen Hazarika, known as the "Bard of the Brahmaputra", and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, known as "Kalaguru", who was also a singer, composer, dancer and freedom fighter.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗West Bengal is linked with cultural figures such as Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray.
  • ✗Odisha is linked with cultural figures such as Kavichandra Kalicharan Pattanayak and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

Tripura is linked with cultural figures such as S.D. Burman, who was born into the royal family of Tripura.

💡 Exam tip

Remember the titles of three great Assamese artists: Jyoti Prasad Agarwala ("Rupkonwar"), Bishnu Prasad Rabha ("Kalaguru") and Bhupen Hazarika ("Sudhakantha" and the "Bard of the Brahmaputra"). "Joymoti" (1935) was the first Assamese film.
