Answer: Option A — Bharatanatyam

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Sudha Chandran, born in 1965, is a Bharatanatyam dancer and actress who is famous for her courage and determination. After losing her right leg in an accident, she returned to dancing with an artificial leg and became an inspiration to millions of people.

Sudha Chandran was born in Mumbai into a Tamil family and began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of three. She gave many performances as a young girl. In 1981, when she was 16, she was seriously injured in a road accident near Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, and because of an infection, her right leg had to be amputated. Many people believed that her dancing career was over. However, she was fitted with the "Jaipur Foot", an artificial limb developed in India by Dr. P.K. Sethi, and after a long period of hard work and practice, she returned to the stage and danced again. Her story attracted national attention. It was made into the Telugu film "Mayuri" (1985), in which she played herself, and the film was remade in Hindi as "Naache Mayuri" (1986). She won a special mention at the National Film Awards for her performance. She later became a popular actress in Hindi and regional films and television serials. She also runs a dance academy.

Bharatanatyam is the classical dance of Tamil Nadu, known for its aramandi (half-sitting posture), complex footwork, sculptural poses, expressive hand gestures and facial expressions. Other actresses trained in Bharatanatyam include Vyjayanthimala, Hema Malini, Padmini, Shobana and Meenakshi Seshadri.
