Answer: Option C — Ghazal King
Detailed Solution
Explanation
Jagjit Singh (1941-2011) is popularly called the "Ghazal King" because he did more than anyone else to make the ghazal popular among ordinary listeners in India in the 1970s and 1980s.
A ghazal is a form of poetry, made up of rhyming couplets (shers) with a common refrain, and it usually deals with love, longing, loss and spirituality. It developed in Persian and Arabic literature and became very popular in Urdu poetry, through poets such as Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz. As a musical form, the ghazal was traditionally sung in a semi-classical style. Jagjit Singh simplified the style, chose poetry that ordinary people could understand, and used modern instruments, such as the guitar and violin, alongside the traditional harmonium and tabla. His album "The Unforgettables" (1976), recorded with his wife Chitra Singh, was a huge success. He sang the poetry of Ghalib in the television serial "Mirza Ghalib" (1988), directed by Gulzar, and his songs for films such as "Arth" (1982) and "Saath Saath" (1982) became very popular. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bhajan Samrat (emperor of bhajans) is the title of Anup Jalota, famous for his devotional songs.
- ✗King of Melody is not Jagjit Singh's popular title. "Melody Queen" is a title often given to Lata Mangeshkar.
- ✗Sufi Sultan is not a recognised title of Jagjit Singh.
