Answer: Option A — Contemporary art
Detailed Solution
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an international exhibition of contemporary art held in Kochi, Kerala.
About the Kochi-Muziris Biennale:
- It is the largest contemporary art exhibition in India and one of the largest in Asia.
- "Biennale" means an event held every two years.
- The first edition opened on 12 December 2012.
- It was founded by two Kerala-born artists, Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu, and is organised by the Kochi Biennale Foundation, with support from the Government of Kerala.
It is held mainly in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, in old warehouses, heritage buildings and public spaces. The main venue is the Aspinwall House, a 19th-century trading building on the waterfront.
It shows paintings, sculptures, installations, films, photography, performance art and new media by artists from India and around the world.
Each edition is curated by a different artist. For example, the 2022-23 edition was curated by Shubigi Rao, and the sixth edition by Nikhil Chopra.
It lasts about three to four months, from December to March or April.
It has helped make Kochi an important centre of the art world and boosted tourism.
Why "Muziris":
- Muziris was an ancient port on the Malabar coast, near present-day Kodungallur and Pattanam in Kerala.
- It was a busy trading centre for spices, especially black pepper, from at least the 1st century BCE, trading with the Roman Empire, Greece, West Asia and China.
- It is mentioned in Sangam literature and in Roman texts such as Pliny's "Natural History" and the "Periplus of the Erythraean Sea".
- It is believed to have declined after a flood of the Periyar river in 1341.
- Excavations at Pattanam have found Roman pottery (amphorae), coins and beads.
- The Muziris Heritage Project, launched by the Kerala government, aims to preserve and promote the history of the region.
Other art events in India:
- India Art Fair (New Delhi): an annual commercial art fair.
- Serendipity Arts Festival (Goa).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Classical dance festivals include the Khajuraho Dance Festival.
- ✗Traditional boat racing in Kerala includes the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
- ✗Spices and handicrafts are shown at trade fairs, not at the Biennale.
Quick tip
Remember: Kochi-Muziris Biennale = contemporary art, Fort Kochi, Kerala (since 2012; founded by Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu); Muziris = ancient spice port near Kodungallur and Pattanam.
