The poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma revived and rejuvenated which dance form?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Mohiniyattam

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Mohiniyattam, the graceful classical dance of Kerala performed by women, had declined badly by the early 20th century. It was linked with the devadasi system and had lost social respect, and few people were willing to learn or perform it. It was revived in the 1930s through the efforts of the poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and the dancer Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma.

Vallathol Narayana Menon (1878-1958) was one of the greatest Malayalam poets of the 20th century and a strong supporter of the freedom movement. He founded the Kerala Kalamandalam in 1930, which later moved to Cheruthuruthy, near the Bharathapuzha river in the Thrissur district. Kalamandalam became the leading centre for training in Kerala's classical arts, especially Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. Vallathol searched for the few surviving teachers of Mohiniyattam and brought them to Kalamandalam to teach young students. Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma (1915-1999) was one of the first students to learn Mohiniyattam at Kalamandalam. She devoted her life to performing, teaching and researching the dance, wrote important books about it, including "Mohiniyattam: History and Dance Structure", and is known as the "mother of Mohiniyattam". She married the famous Kathakali artist Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair.

Mohiniyattam means "the dance of the enchantress", from Mohini, the female form of Vishnu. It is performed in a white or off-white saree with a gold border, and its songs are in Manipravalam, with the edakka as the main drum.

Why not the other options?

Bharatanatyam was revived by E. Krishna Iyer and Rukmini Devi Arundale.

Kuchipudi was developed into a solo form by Vedantam Lakshminarayana Sastry and Vempati Chinna Satyam.

Odissi was revived by Kelucharan Mohapatra and other gurus through the Jayantika association.

💡 Exam tip

Vallathol is linked with two dances, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, through the Kerala Kalamandalam (1930). Kalyanikutty Amma is linked only with Mohiniyattam.
