The Tanjore Quartet (Chinnaiah, Ponnaiah, Sivanandam and Vadivelu) are remembered for shaping which dance?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Bharatanatyam
Detailed Solution
Explanation
The Tanjore Quartet were four brothers, Chinnaiah, Ponnaiah, Sivanandam and Vadivelu, who were dance masters and musicians at the court of Thanjavur in the early 19th century. They organised the repertoire of the temple and court dance (Sadir) into the structured recital that is still followed in Bharatanatyam today.
The brothers lived in the time of the Maratha ruler Serfoji II of Thanjavur, a great patron of the arts. They were disciples of Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the Trinity of Carnatic music, and they composed many songs and dance pieces themselves. Their most important contribution was the "margam", the order of items in a dance recital. A traditional Bharatanatyam recital begins with the Alarippu (an invocation of pure dance), followed by the Jatiswaram, the Shabdam, the Varnam (the central and most demanding item, combining pure dance and expression), the Padam and Javali (expressive songs), and ends with the Tillana, a lively piece of pure dance. Many of their compositions, especially their varnams, are still performed. Vadivelu is also remembered for helping to introduce the violin into Carnatic music. Their descendants continued as dance teachers (nattuvanars), and Ponnaiah's descendants included the famous Pandanallur gurus.
Bharatanatyam is the classical dance of Tamil Nadu. It developed from Sadir, the dance of the devadasis, and was revived in the 1930s by E. Krishna Iyer and Rukmini Devi Arundale, who founded Kalakshetra (1936). It is known for its fixed half-sitting posture (aramandi), its precise footwork and its rich expressions.
Why not the other options?
Mohiniyattam is the classical dance of Kerala. Its modern form was influenced by Vadivelu of the Quartet, who served at the court of Travancore, but the Quartet is famous mainly for Bharatanatyam.
Odissi is the classical dance of Odisha.
Yakshagana is the traditional theatre of Karnataka.
