Bandipur National Park is located in which state?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Karnataka
Detailed Solution
Bandipur National Park lies in the Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka, near the borders of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It was once the private hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Mysore. A sanctuary called the Venugopala Wildlife Park was set up here in 1931, and it was later enlarged and declared a national park in 1974.
In 1973-74, Bandipur became one of the first nine tiger reserves in India under Project Tiger. It is one of India's best-known tiger habitats and also has a large population of Asian elephants, along with gaur (Indian bison), sambar, chital, dhole (wild dog), leopards and sloth bears. The park has dry deciduous and moist deciduous forests, with teak and rosewood trees.
Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was India's first biosphere reserve, set up in 1986. This reserve covers parts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Bandipur is joined to other protected areas: Nagarhole (Rajiv Gandhi) National Park in Karnataka, Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala. Together, these form one of the largest continuous protected forest areas in South India and one of the largest populations of wild elephants and tigers in the world.
The Kabini, Moyar and Nugu rivers flow through the region. National highways passing through Bandipur are closed to traffic at night to protect wildlife from being hit by vehicles.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Kerala has the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary next to Bandipur, and the Periyar and Silent Valley parks.
- ✗Tamil Nadu has Mudumalai National Park, which adjoins Bandipur.
- ✗Andhra Pradesh has the Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve.
Quick tip
Remember: Bandipur = Karnataka, Project Tiger reserve (1973-74) and part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve with Nagarhole, Mudumalai and Wayanad.

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
