The Manas Biosphere Reserve is located in:
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Assam
Detailed Solution
Manas National Park lies in western Assam, in the foothills of the Himalayas, along the border with Bhutan. It is named after the Manas river, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra, which flows through the park. Across the border, it is joined by the Royal Manas National Park of Bhutan.
Manas has many protections. It was one of the first nine tiger reserves under Project Tiger in 1973. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site (natural) in 1985. It is also an elephant reserve and a biosphere reserve (declared in 1989). It became a national park in 1990. Because of insurgency and poaching, UNESCO placed it on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1992, but after conservation efforts it was removed from that list in 2011.
The park has a mix of grasslands and forests. It is known for rare and endangered species that are found in very few places, such as the pygmy hog (the world's smallest wild pig), the hispid hare, the golden langur and the Bengal florican. Other animals include tigers, Asian elephants, one-horned rhinoceroses (reintroduced), wild water buffalo and clouded leopards.
Assam has many other famous protected areas: Kaziranga (a World Heritage Site known for the one-horned rhinoceros), Nameri, Orang, Dibru-Saikhowa and the Dihing Patkai National Park.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Meghalaya has the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, known for wild citrus (the Citrus indica).
- ✗West Bengal has the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve.
- ✗Arunachal Pradesh has the Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve.
Quick tip
Remember: Manas = Assam on the Bhutan border, tiger reserve (1973), World Heritage Site (1985), biosphere reserve (1989), and home of the pygmy hog and golden langur.

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
