The Namdapha Tiger Reserve is located in:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Arunachal Pradesh

Detailed Solution

Namdapha National Park is in the Changlang district of eastern Arunachal Pradesh, close to the border with Myanmar. It was declared a national park in 1983 and a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in the same year. Covering about 1,985 square kilometres, it is one of the largest protected areas in India.

Namdapha is remarkable for its range of altitude, from about 200 metres in the river valleys to more than 4,500 metres on the snowy peaks of the Dapha Bum range. Because of this, it has many types of vegetation, from tropical evergreen rainforests to temperate and alpine forests. The park is named after the Namdapha river, which flows through it into the Noa-Dihing river.

The park is part of the Eastern Himalaya and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots. It is the only park in the world known to have four species of big cats: the tiger, the leopard, the snow leopard and the clouded leopard. It is also home to the hoolock gibbon, which is India's only ape, the red panda, the Asian elephant, the takin and many species of birds. The Namdapha flying squirrel, a rare species, is found only here.

Other protected areas of Arunachal Pradesh include the Pakke (Pakhui) Tiger Reserve and the Kamlang Tiger Reserve, as well as the Mouling National Park.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Assam has the Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri and Orang tiger reserves.
  • ✗Sikkim has the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • ✗Nagaland has the Ntangki (Intanki) National Park.

Quick tip

Remember: Namdapha = Arunachal Pradesh (Changlang district), four big cats (tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard) and the hoolock gibbon.

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
