Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Adolf Hitler

Detailed Solution

"Mein Kampf" (German for "My Struggle") is the autobiographical book of Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany. It was written in German and published in two volumes, in 1925 and 1926.

How the book was written:

  • Hitler dictated most of the first volume while he was imprisoned in Landsberg Prison, Bavaria, after the failed "Beer Hall Putsch" in Munich in November 1923.
  • His fellow prisoner Rudolf Hess helped him by typing and editing the manuscript.

About the book:

It describes Hitler's early life in Austria, his experiences in World War I, and the founding of the Nazi Party.

It sets out his political ideology, including extreme nationalism, racism, antisemitism, hatred of communism and the idea of "Lebensraum" (living space) for Germans in Eastern Europe. These ideas later led to World War II and the Holocaust.

After Hitler came to power in 1933, millions of copies were sold or distributed in Germany.

After World War II, the Bavarian state government held the copyright and did not allow it to be republished in Germany. After the copyright expired at the end of 2015, an annotated critical edition was published in 2016.

About Adolf Hitler (1889-1945):

  • He was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria.
  • He became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933 and took the title "Führer".
  • He died by suicide in Berlin in April 1945, shortly before Germany's surrender in World War II.

Writings of other 20th-century leaders:

  • Benito Mussolini (Italy): "My Autobiography"; founder of Fascism.
  • Joseph Stalin (USSR): "Foundations of Leninism".
  • Karl Marx: "Das Kapital" and, with Engels, "The Communist Manifesto" (1848).
  • Mao Zedong (China): "Quotations from Chairman Mao" (the "Little Red Book").
  • Nelson Mandela: "Long Walk to Freedom".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Benito Mussolini was the Fascist dictator of Italy.
  • ✗Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union.
  • ✗Otto von Bismarck unified Germany in 1871 and wrote memoirs called "Thoughts and Reminiscences".

Quick tip

Remember: "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle") = Adolf Hitler, written in German in Landsberg Prison (1925-26) with Rudolf Hess; "Long Walk to Freedom" = Mandela; "Das Kapital" = Marx.
