Answer: Option D — Amrita Pritam

Detailed Solution

"Pinjar" ("The Skeleton") is a Punjabi novel by Amrita Pritam, published in 1950. It is one of the most powerful works of literature about the Partition of India.

About the novel:

  • It tells the story of Puro, a young Hindu girl who is abducted by Rashid, a Muslim man, because of an old family feud, shortly before Partition.
  • After she escapes, her own family refuses to take her back, and she is forced to live with Rashid.
  • During the Partition riots, Puro helps rescue other abducted women, including her brother's fiancée.
  • The novel explores the suffering of women during communal conflict and the idea of identity and belonging.
  • In 2003, it was made into a Hindi film, "Pinjar", directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, with Urmila Matondkar as Puro.

About Amrita Pritam (1919-2005):

  • She was born in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan) and moved to India after Partition.
  • She is regarded as the first prominent woman poet and novelist of Punjabi literature.

  • She was the first woman to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award (1956) for her poetry collection "Sunehade".
  • She received the Jnanpith Award (1981) for "Kagaz Te Canvas", the Padma Vibhushan (2004), and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
  • Her autobiography is "Raseedi Ticket" ("The Revenue Stamp").

Other women writers and their famous works:

  • Ismat Chughtai: "Lihaaf" (The Quilt) and "Tedhi Lakeer".
  • Mahadevi Verma: "Yama" (Jnanpith, 1982) and "Deepshikha"; called the "Modern Meera".
