Answer: Option C — Helen Keller
Detailed Solution
"The Story of My Life" is the autobiography of Helen Keller, the American author and activist who was deaf and blind. It was published in 1903, when she was 22 and still a student at Radcliffe College.
About the book:
- It describes how, at the age of about 19 months, Helen lost her sight and hearing after a serious illness (possibly scarlet fever or meningitis).
- As a young child, she could not communicate and became frustrated and wild.
- In 1887, when she was nearly seven, her teacher Anne Sullivan, who was herself partially blind, came to live with her family in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
Anne Sullivan taught her to communicate by spelling words into her hand. The breakthrough came at a water pump, when Helen understood that the letters "w-a-t-e-r" spelled into her hand meant the cool water flowing over her other hand.
Helen went on to learn to read Braille, to write and even to speak.
About Helen Keller (1880-1968):
- In 1904, she graduated from Radcliffe College, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
- She became a famous writer, lecturer and activist for people with disabilities, women's suffrage and workers' rights.
- She helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and worked for the American Foundation for the Blind.
- She visited many countries, including India in 1955, where she met Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Her life was dramatised in the play and film "The Miracle Worker" (1962). The Hindi film "Black" (2005), by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was inspired by her story.
She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.
Other life stories:
- Anne Frank: "The Diary of a Young Girl".
- Florence Nightingale: founder of modern nursing.
- Eleanor Roosevelt: "This Is My Story".
Why not the other options?
- ✗Anne Frank wrote "The Diary of a Young Girl".
- ✗Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing.
- ✗Eleanor Roosevelt wrote "This Is My Story".
Quick tip
Remember: "The Story of My Life" (1903) = Helen Keller (deaf-blind; teacher Anne Sullivan; "water" at the pump; first deaf-blind BA, 1904); "The Miracle Worker"; Hindi film "Black".
