Detailed Solution
- Lawrence. "The Rainbow" is a novel by the English writer David Herbert Lawrence, published in 1915.
About the novel:
- It follows three generations of the Brangwen family, a farming family in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, from the 1840s to the early 1900s.
- It begins with Tom Brangwen and his Polish wife Lydia, continues with Anna and Will Brangwen, and focuses finally on Ursula Brangwen, a young woman who seeks independence, education, work and personal fulfilment.
- It explores marriage, love, sexuality, religion and the changes brought by industrialisation to rural England.
- The rainbow at the end of the novel is a symbol of hope and renewal.
Soon after it was published, it was prosecuted for obscenity. More than 1,000 copies were seized and burnt, and it was banned in Britain for 11 years.
Its sequel, "Women in Love" (1920), continues the story of Ursula and her sister Gudrun.
