Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Jerome K. Jerome

Detailed Solution

Jerome. "Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)" is a comic novel by the English writer Jerome Klapka Jerome, published in 1889.

About the novel:

It describes a two-week boating holiday on the River Thames, from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back, taken by three friends: the narrator J. (Jerome himself), George and Harris, along with a fox terrier named Montmorency.

The friends decide that a river trip will cure their imagined illnesses and overwork.

The book is full of humorous incidents, such as their struggles with packing, opening a tin of pineapple without a tin-opener, cooking an "Irish stew", and dealing with the weather.

Between the funny episodes, the narrator describes the history of places along the Thames, such as Hampton Court and Runnymede, where Magna Carta was signed.

The characters were based on Jerome and his real friends, and the trip was based on their own boating holidays.

It was hugely popular and has never been out of print.

A sequel, "Three Men on the Bummel" (1900), describes a cycling tour in Germany.

About Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927):

  • He was born in Walsall, England, and worked as a clerk, actor, teacher and journalist before becoming a writer.
  • He co-founded and edited the humorous magazine "The Idler".
  • His other works include "Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow" (1886) and the play "The Passing of the Third Floor Back".

Other English humorous writers:

  • G. Wodehouse: the "Jeeves and Wooster" stories and "Blandings Castle".
  • Lewis Carroll: "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".
  • Charles Dickens: "The Pickwick Papers".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗G. Wodehouse created Jeeves and Wooster.
  • ✗Lewis Carroll wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".
  • ✗Charles Dickens wrote "The Pickwick Papers".

Quick tip

Remember: "Three Men in a Boat" (1889; J., George, Harris and the dog Montmorency on the Thames) = Jerome K. Jerome; "Jeeves and Wooster" = P. G. Wodehouse.
