Answer: Option D — Ibrahim Lodi
Detailed Solution
In the Battle of Khatoli, fought in 1517-18, Rana Sanga (Sangram Singh) of Mewar defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi.
About the battle:
- Khatoli is located in the Kota region (Hadoti) of Rajasthan, near the border of present-day Madhya Pradesh.
- Ibrahim Lodi, who had just become Sultan, marched against Rana Sanga, who had been expanding his power into the eastern parts of Rajasthan and the territories of Malwa.
- Rana Sanga won a decisive victory; according to Rajput accounts, a Lodi prince was captured and later released.
- Rana Sanga lost an arm and was injured in the leg (which made him lame) during this battle, according to tradition.
The Battle of Dholpur (Bari):
- Ibrahim Lodi sent another army against Rana Sanga, but it was again defeated, at Dholpur (Bari), around 1519.
- These victories made Rana Sanga the most powerful Rajput ruler of north India.
About Rana Sanga:
- He ruled Mewar from 1508 to 1528.
- He was a brave warrior, and is said to have had about 80 wounds on his body, as well as the loss of an eye and an arm.
- He also defeated Mahmud Khalji II of Malwa, and the Sultan of Gujarat.
- He led a confederacy of Rajput rulers and Afghan chiefs against Babur.
- He was defeated by Babur in the Battle of Khanwa (1527).
- He died in 1528, possibly poisoned by his own nobles, who did not want to continue the war.
About Ibrahim Lodi:
- He became Sultan of Delhi in 1517, after the death of his father, Sikandar Lodi.
- He was proud and suspicious, and tried to reduce the power of the nobles, which made many of them hostile to him.
- Daulat Khan Lodi, the governor of Punjab, and Alam Khan (Ibrahim's uncle) invited Babur to invade India.
- He was defeated and killed by Babur at the First Battle of Panipat (1526), the only Sultan of Delhi to die on the battlefield.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Babur defeated Rana Sanga at Khanwa.
- ✗Mahmud Khalji II of Malwa was defeated by Rana Sanga separately.
- ✗Sikandar Lodi had died before this battle.
Quick tip
Remember: Battle of Khatoli (1517-18) = Rana Sanga defeated Ibrahim Lodi; Dholpur (1519) = another victory; Khanwa (1527) = Babur defeated Rana Sanga.
