Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — 1504
Detailed Solution
Sultan Sikandar Lodi founded the city of Agra, on the banks of the Yamuna, in 1504 CE (some sources give 1505).
About the founding of Agra:
- Sikandar Lodi chose the site of an older settlement on the Yamuna to build a new city.
- He wanted a base from which he could better control the chiefs of the region, such as those of Gwalior, Dholpur and Bayana, and the eastern parts of his kingdom.
- He shifted his capital from Delhi to Agra in 1506.
- Agra later became the capital of the Mughal emperors, especially Akbar (who built the Agra Fort) and Shah Jahan (who built the Taj Mahal).
About Sikandar Lodi:
- His original name was Nizam Khan.
- He ruled from 1489 to 1517, succeeding his father, Bahlol Lodi.
- He was the most capable ruler of his dynasty.
- He annexed Bihar and extended his control over the region of Jaunpur and parts of Rajasthan.
- He made the nobles respect the authority of the Sultan.
His administration:
- He introduced the "Gaz-i-Sikandari", a measuring yard (about 32 digits or 30 inches), which was used for measuring land; it was used until the Mughal period.
- He ordered a survey of land and kept a check on revenue accounts.
- He kept a close watch on the nobles through spies.
- He abolished the corn duty (zakat on grain) to encourage trade.
His cultural activities:
- He was a poet, and wrote Persian verses under the pen name "Gulrukhi".
- He encouraged learning, and had a Sanskrit work on medicine translated into Persian as "Farhang-i-Sikandari" (or "Tibb-i-Sikandari").
- He was, however, intolerant towards some other religions.
His tomb:
- His tomb is in the Lodi Gardens, Delhi.
- Sikandra, near Agra (where Akbar's tomb stands), is believed to have been named after him.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1489 was the year of Sikandar Lodi's accession.
- ✗1526 was the year of the First Battle of Panipat.
- ✗1556 was the year of the Second Battle of Panipat.
Quick tip
Remember: Agra founded by Sikandar Lodi in 1504 (capital shifted 1506); Gaz-i-Sikandari (measuring yard); pen name Gulrukhi; Sikandra named after him.
