Answer: Option D — 1792
Detailed Solution
The Treaty of Seringapatam (Srirangapatna) was signed in March 1792 between Tipu Sultan and Lord Cornwallis (on behalf of the English East India Company, the Nizam and the Marathas), ending the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790-1792).
Causes of the war:
- Tipu Sultan attacked Travancore (1789), an ally of the English, over a dispute about some territories.
- The English regarded this as an attack on their ally.
- The Governor-General, Lord Cornwallis, formed an alliance with the Nizam and the Marathas against Tipu.
Course of the war:
- The English, the Nizam and the Marathas invaded Mysore from different directions.
- Cornwallis personally led the campaign.
- The allies captured Bangalore (1791) and besieged Srirangapatna, Tipu's capital.
- Tipu was forced to make peace.
Terms of the treaty:
- Tipu had to give up about half of his kingdom to the allies.
- The English received Malabar, Coorg, Dindigul and Baramahal.
- The Marathas and the Nizam received territories in the north.
- Tipu had to pay a war indemnity of about 3 crore rupees.
- Two of his young sons were taken as hostages by the English until the indemnity was paid.
Significance:
- The treaty greatly weakened Mysore.
- Cornwallis is said to have remarked that they had "effectually crippled" the enemy without making their friends too formidable.
- Tipu rebuilt his strength and sought help from the French, which led to the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799.
About Lord Cornwallis:
- He was the Governor-General of India from 1786 to 1793 (and briefly again in 1805).
- He is known for his administrative and revenue reforms in Bengal.
- He had earlier surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown (1781) in the American War of Independence.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1784 was the year of the treaty ending the Second war.
- ✗1790 was the year the Third war began.
- ✗1799 was the year of Tipu's death.
Quick tip
Remember: Treaty of Seringapatam (1792) ended the Third Anglo-Mysore War (Lord Cornwallis; Tipu gave up half his kingdom; two sons as hostages).
