Detailed Solution
"Anandwan" ("forest of joy"), a community near Warora in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, for the care, treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients and other disadvantaged people, was founded by Baba Amte in 1949-1951.
About Baba Amte:
- His full name was Murlidhar Devidas Amte; he was born on 26 December 1914 at Hinganghat, in the Wardha district of Maharashtra.
- He was a lawyer from a wealthy family, who gave up his practice to serve the poor.
- He was influenced by Gandhi and took part in the freedom struggle.
- He was moved to serve leprosy patients after he saw a dying leprosy patient abandoned on the road.
About Anandwan:
- At a time when leprosy patients were treated as outcasts, he started a community where they could live with dignity, receive treatment and work for their living.
- It began with a few patients and a small piece of land, and grew into a self-reliant community with farms, workshops, schools, hospitals and colleges.
- The residents themselves run many of its activities.
- He also founded other projects, such as Somnath and Lok Biradari Prakalp (at Hemalkasa, for the Madia Gond tribals, run by his son Dr Prakash Amte).
His other work:
- He led the "Bharat Jodo" (Unite India) movement in 1985, a long march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, for national unity and peace.
- He was an active participant in the Narmada Bachao Andolan, opposing the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
Awards:
- He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1985), the Padma Vibhushan (1986), the Gandhi Peace Prize (1999) and the UN Human Rights Prize (1988), among others.
- He died on 9 February 2008.
His family:
His wife Sadhana Amte, sons Vikas and Prakash Amte, and their families continue his work.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Vinoba Bhave led the Bhoodan movement; Mother Teresa worked in Kolkata; Sunderlal Bahuguna led the Chipko movement.
Quick tip
Remember: Anandwan (Warora, Chandrapur, Maharashtra) = Baba Amte (leprosy patients; Bharat Jodo 1985; Magsaysay 1985); Hemalkasa project = Dr Prakash Amte.
