Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1992

Detailed Solution

The legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1992. That same year, he also received an Honorary Academy Award (Oscar) for lifetime achievement.

About the 1992 awards:

The Honorary Oscar was presented to him in March 1992 while he was seriously ill in a hospital bed in Calcutta. He accepted it through a video link. He was the first Indian to receive an Academy Award.

He died on 23 April 1992, shortly after receiving these honours.

About Satyajit Ray (1921-1992):

He was born on 2 May 1921 in Calcutta, into a family of writers and artists. His grandfather was Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury and his father was the writer Sukumar Ray.

He studied at Presidency College and at Rabindranath Tagore's Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan.

He worked as a commercial artist before turning to films.

His first film, "Pather Panchali" (1955), based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's novel, won the "Best Human Document" award at the Cannes Film Festival (1956).

"Pather Panchali", "Aparajito" (1956) and "Apur Sansar" (1959) form the "Apu Trilogy".

His other famous films include "Jalsaghar", "Charulata", "Nayak", "Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne", "Shatranj Ke Khilari" (his first Hindi film, 1977), "Sonar Kella" and "Agantuk" (his last film, 1991).

He created the fictional detective "Feluda" and the scientist "Professor Shonku".

He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1984) and France's Légion d'honneur (1987).

He also received the Padma Shri (1958), Padma Bhushan (1965) and Padma Vibhushan (1976).

Other film personalities with Bharat Ratna:

  • G. Ramachandran (1988, posthumously; also a Chief Minister).
  • Lata Mangeshkar (2001).
  • Bhupen Hazarika (2019, posthumously).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1984 is the year Ray received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
  • ✗1989 and 1995 are not years in which Ray received major honours.

Quick tip

Remember: Satyajit Ray = Bharat Ratna and Honorary Oscar in 1992; Dadasaheb Phalke 1984; "Pather Panchali" (1955); created Feluda and Professor Shonku.
