Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Edwin Lutyens

Detailed Solution

India Gate, the war memorial in New Delhi, was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.

About India Gate:

  • It was originally called the "All India War Memorial".
  • It was built to honour the soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War (1914-1918) and in the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919).
  • The names of more than 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on it.
  • The foundation stone was laid on 10 February 1921 by the Duke of Connaught.
  • It was completed and dedicated on 12 February 1931 by the Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
  • It is about 42 metres high and is built of red and yellow sandstone, in the style of a triumphal arch similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The "Amar Jawan Jyoti" (eternal flame) was set up beneath the arch in 1972 to honour the soldiers who died in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 26 January 1972.

In January 2022, the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame was merged with the flame at the National War Memorial, which was inaugurated nearby in February 2019.

In September 2022, a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was unveiled under the canopy near India Gate.

The road from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan, formerly called "Rajpath", was renamed "Kartavya Path" in September 2022.

About Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944):

  • He was the chief architect of New Delhi, the new capital of British India, which was inaugurated in 1931.
  • He designed the Viceroy's House (now Rashtrapati Bhavan) and India Gate.
  • New Delhi is sometimes called "Lutyens' Delhi".

Other architects:

  • Herbert Baker: North Block, South Block and, with Lutyens, the Parliament House (Council House).
  • George Wittet: Gateway of India, Mumbai.
  • Robert Tor Russell: Connaught Place and Teen Murti Bhavan.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Herbert Baker designed the North and South Blocks.
  • ✗George Wittet designed the Gateway of India.
  • ✗Robert Tor Russell designed Connaught Place.

Quick tip

Remember: India Gate (All India War Memorial; dedicated 1931) and Rashtrapati Bhavan = Edwin Lutyens; Gateway of India = George Wittet; Connaught Place = Robert Tor Russell.
