Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — 4 September 2016
Detailed Solution
Mother Teresa was canonised (declared a saint) by Pope Francis at a ceremony in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, on 4 September 2016. She is now known in the Catholic Church as "Saint Teresa of Calcutta".
About the process:
- Canonisation in the Catholic Church normally requires two miracles attributed to the person's intercession after death.
- She was beatified (declared "Blessed") by Pope John Paul II on 19 October 2003, after the Church recognised the healing of Monica Besra, a woman from West Bengal, as her first miracle.
- The second recognised miracle was the healing of a man in Brazil who had a brain infection.
- The canonisation date was the day before the 19th anniversary of her death.
About Mother Teresa (1910-1997):
She was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910 in Skopje (now the capital of North Macedonia), to an Albanian family.
She joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland in 1928 and came to India in 1929, where she taught at St. Mary's School in Calcutta.
On 10 September 1946, while travelling by train to Darjeeling, she experienced what she called a "call within a call" to serve the poorest of the poor.
In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.
She set up "Nirmal Hriday" (a home for the dying) in Kalighat (1952), "Shishu Bhavan" for children, and homes for leprosy patients.
She became an Indian citizen in 1948 (some sources give 1951).
She died on 5 September 1997 in Calcutta.
Honours:
- Ramon Magsaysay Award (1962).
- Padma Shri (1962).
- Nobel Peace Prize (1979), received on 10 December 1979.
- Bharat Ratna (1980).
- Her death anniversary, 5 September, is observed as the International Day of Charity (declared by the UN in 2012).
Why not the other options?
- ✗19 October 2003 was the date of her beatification.
- ✗5 September 1997 was the date of her death.
- ✗10 December 1979 was the date she received the Nobel Peace Prize.
