Detailed Solution
Mario de Miranda (1926-2011) was a famous Indian cartoonist and illustrator from Goa.
About Mario de Miranda:
He was born on 2 May 1926 in Daman, where his Goan family was then living, and grew up in the family home at Loutolim, in South Goa.
He studied at St. Xavier's College, Bombay, and began drawing cartoons from a young age, even on the walls of his home.
He worked for "The Illustrated Weekly of India", "The Times of India", "Femina", "The Economic Times" and the "Current" magazine.
His drawings are known for their crowded, lively scenes, full of people with humorous expressions, and for their gentle, affectionate humour.
His famous characters include Miss Fonseca (a glamorous secretary), Godbole (a clerk), Bundaldass (a politician) and Boss.
He illustrated many books, including several by the author Manohar Malgonkar and books about Goa.
His drawings decorate the walls of many places, including the famous Cafe Mondegar in Colaba, Mumbai.
He also drew scenes of Goan village life, churches, festivals and markets.
Honours:
- Padma Shri (1988).
- Padma Bhushan (2002).
- Padma Vibhushan (2012, posthumously).
- He died on 11 December 2011 at his home in Loutolim.
Other famous Indian cartoonists:
- K. Laxman: created "The Common Man" in "You Said It" (The Times of India); brother of R. K. Narayan.
- Shankar Pillai ("Shankar"): "Father of Indian political cartooning"; founded "Shankar's Weekly" (1948) and the Children's Book Trust.
- Abu Abraham: "The Observer" and "The Indian Express".
- Anant Pai ("Uncle Pai"): founder of "Amar Chitra Katha" and "Tinkle".
Why not the other options?
Kerala was the home of the cartoonist Shankar (K. Shankar Pillai).
Maharashtra was where Mario worked, but he was from Goa.
Karnataka was the home state of R. K. Laxman (Mysore).
Quick tip
Remember: Mario de Miranda = Goa (Loutolim; Miss Fonseca, Godbole; Cafe Mondegar murals; Padma Vibhushan 2012); R. K. Laxman = "The Common Man"; Shankar = "Shankar's Weekly".
