Answer: Option B — Bachpan Bachao Andolan
Detailed Solution
Kailash Satyarthi is the founder of the "Bachpan Bachao Andolan" ("Save the Childhood Movement"), which works to end child labour, child trafficking and child slavery in India.
About Kailash Satyarthi:
- He was born on 11 January 1954 in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh.
- He trained as an electrical engineer but gave up his career in 1980 to campaign against child labour.
- He founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) in 1980.
- The BBA has rescued more than 1,00,000 children from child labour, bonded labour and trafficking, and has helped them get education and rehabilitation.
In 1998, he led the "Global March Against Child Labour", an 80,000-km march across 103 countries, which helped bring about the International Labour Organization's Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour (1999).
He started "RugMark" (now "GoodWeave") in 1994, a label certifying that carpets were made without child labour.
He helped start the "Global Campaign for Education" (1999).
He founded the "Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation" and campaigns such as "Bharat Yatra" (2017) against child sexual abuse and trafficking, and "100 Million for 100 Million" (2016).
In 2014, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education". He was the first India-born person to win the Nobel Peace Prize (Mother Teresa, who won it in 1979, was an Indian citizen born in Skopje).
About child labour laws in India:
- Article 24 of the Constitution prohibits the employment of children below 14 years in factories, mines and hazardous occupations.
- Article 21A (added by the 86th Amendment, 2002) makes free and compulsory education for children aged 6-14 a fundamental right.
The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 was amended in 2016 to ban the employment of children below 14 in all occupations (except family businesses after school hours) and of adolescents (14-18) in hazardous occupations.
World Day Against Child Labour is observed on 12 June.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Narmada Bachao Andolan was led by Medha Patkar and Baba Amte against large dams.
- ✗Chipko Andolan was a forest conservation movement in Uttarakhand.
- ✗Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a government scheme launched in 2015.
Quick tip
Remember: Kailash Satyarthi = Bachpan Bachao Andolan (1980; Global March Against Child Labour 1998; RugMark/GoodWeave; Nobel Peace 2014 with Malala); Article 24 = no child labour below 14; World Day Against Child Labour = 12 June.
