Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Nadia (Nabadwip), West Bengal

Detailed Solution

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534), the great Vaishnava saint and reformer, was born in Nabadwip (Navadvipa), in the Nadia district of West Bengal.

About Chaitanya Mahaprabhu:

He was born on 18 February 1486, on the full-moon day of Phalguna (Holi), with the name Vishvambhar Mishra. He was also called "Nimai" and "Gauranga" (because of his fair complexion).

He was a brilliant Sanskrit scholar in his youth.

At about the age of 22, he visited Gaya to perform his father's last rites and met the saint Ishvara Puri, who initiated him into Krishna devotion.

He took sannyasa (renunciation) at the age of 24 and was given the name "Krishna Chaitanya".

He spent most of the rest of his life in Puri, Odisha, where he worshipped Lord Jagannath. He died in Puri in 1534.

He also travelled to south India and to Vrindavan.

His teachings:

  • He preached devotion (bhakti) to Krishna and Radha, especially through "sankirtan" (group singing and dancing of the names of God).
  • He popularised the chanting of the "Hare Krishna" mantra.
  • He rejected caste distinctions in devotion and accepted followers from all castes and religions.
  • His philosophy is called "Achintya Bheda Abheda" ("inconceivable oneness and difference" between God and the soul).
  • His followers are known as Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
  • His followers, the "Six Goswamis" of Vrindavan (including Rupa and Sanatana Goswami), wrote the main texts of the tradition.
  • His biography "Chaitanya Charitamrita" was written by Krishnadasa Kaviraja.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in New York in 1966, follows his tradition. Its world headquarters is at Mayapur, near Nabadwip.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Puri, Odisha, is where Chaitanya spent his later years and died.
  • ✗Vrindavan was the centre of the Six Goswamis.
  • ✗Majuli, Assam, is associated with Srimanta Sankardeva's "satras".

Quick tip

Remember: Chaitanya Mahaprabhu = born Nabadwip, Nadia (1486; "Nimai", "Gauranga"); died Puri (1534); sankirtan; Gaudiya Vaishnavism; ISKCON follows him (HQ Mayapur).
