Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Vallabhbhai Patel and Indulal Yagnik

Detailed Solution

In the Kheda Satyagraha (1918), Gandhi was helped by Vallabhbhai Patel and Indulal Yagnik, along with other young workers.

Background:

  • In 1917-1918, the crops in the Kheda district of Gujarat failed, because of excessive rain.
  • According to the revenue code, if the crop was less than one-fourth of the normal yield, the peasants were entitled to remission (cancellation) of the land revenue.
  • The government refused to grant remission, and insisted on collecting the full revenue.

NCERT on Kheda:

  • NCERT notes that in 1918, Gandhiji went to Gujarat to organise a satyagraha movement to support the peasants of the Kheda district.
  • Affected by crop failure and a plague epidemic, the peasants of Kheda could not pay the revenue, and were demanding that revenue collection be relaxed.

The satyagraha:

  • Gandhi advised the peasants not to pay the revenue, and to face the consequences, such as the confiscation of their property, peacefully.
  • Peasants took a pledge not to pay.
  • The government confiscated cattle and property of some peasants.

Outcome:

  • The government issued secret instructions that revenue should be collected only from those who could afford to pay, and that the poor peasants should be given relief.
  • Gandhi then withdrew the campaign.

Significance:

  • It was Gandhi's first "non-cooperation" campaign in India.
  • It brought Vallabhbhai Patel, a successful lawyer of Ahmedabad, into the national movement as a close associate of Gandhi.
  • Patel later led the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928), after which he was given the title "Sardar".

About Indulal Yagnik:

He was a journalist and leader from Gujarat, who later led the Mahagujarat Movement (1956-1960) for the creation of a separate state of Gujarat; he was popularly called "Indu Chacha".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Rajendra Prasad and Kripalani helped Gandhi elsewhere.

The Nehrus, C. R. Das and Bose were not leaders of the Kheda Satyagraha.

Quick tip

Remember: Kheda Satyagraha (1918) = Gandhi with Vallabhbhai Patel and Indulal Yagnik (crop failure; demand for revenue remission; NCERT); Patel later led Bardoli (1928).
