Nagaland Statehood Day is observed on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 1 December

Detailed Solution

Nagaland became the 16th state of India on 1 December 1963, and this day is celebrated every year as Nagaland Statehood Day.

About the formation of Nagaland:

Before statehood, the Naga Hills were part of Assam. In 1957, the Naga Hills district and the Tuensang Frontier Division were combined into a single administrative unit, the "Naga Hills Tuensang Area", governed directly by the Centre.

After the "Sixteen Point Agreement" between the Government of India and the Naga People's Convention in 1960, it was agreed to create a separate state.

The State of Nagaland Act, 1962 was passed by Parliament.

The state was inaugurated on 1 December 1963 by President S. Radhakrishnan at Kohima.

  • Shilu Ao became the first Chief Minister.

Article 371A of the Constitution (added by the 13th Amendment Act, 1962) gives special provisions to Nagaland. Acts of Parliament on Naga religious or social practices, customary law, and ownership of land and resources do not apply unless the state assembly decides so.

About Nagaland:

Capital: Kohima. Largest city: Dimapur.

It has 16 or more recognised tribes, such as the Angami, Ao, Konyak, Lotha, Sema (Sumi) and Chakhesang.

The Battle of Kohima (1944) during the Second World War stopped the Japanese advance into India.

Hornbill Festival: the "Festival of Festivals" is held every year from 1 to 10 December at Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, beginning on Statehood Day. It was started in 2000.

The highest peak is Mount Saramati.

Statehood days of other north-eastern states:

  • Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya: 21 January (1972).
  • Sikkim: 16 May (1975).
  • Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram: 20 February (1987).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗21 January is the statehood day of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura.
  • ✗16 May is Sikkim's statehood day.
  • ✗20 February is the statehood day of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

Quick tip

Remember: Nagaland = 16th state, 1 December 1963 (Kohima; Article 371A; Hornbill Festival 1-10 December); Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura = 21 January 1972; Sikkim = 16 May 1975.
