Answer: Option D — 3 March
Detailed Solution
UN World Wildlife Day is celebrated every year on 3 March to celebrate the world's wild animals and plants and to raise awareness of the threats they face.
Why 3 March:
- On 3 March 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed in Washington, D.C., USA.
- In December 2013, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 3 March as World Wildlife Day, on a proposal by Thailand.
- It was first observed on 3 March 2014.
About CITES:
It regulates international trade in wild animals and plants to ensure that trade does not threaten their survival.
It came into force on 1 July 1975. Its secretariat is in Geneva, Switzerland, and is administered by UNEP.
It lists species in three appendices:
- Appendix I: species threatened with extinction; commercial trade is generally banned (for example, tigers, Asian elephants and most rhinos).
- Appendix II: species not necessarily threatened now but which could become so unless trade is controlled.
- Appendix III: species protected in at least one country that has asked others for help in controlling trade.
- India became a party to CITES in 1976.
Wildlife protection in India:
- Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972; it was amended in 2022 partly to implement CITES provisions.
- The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) was set up in 2007 to fight organised wildlife crime.
- Project Tiger (1973), Project Elephant (1992), Project Cheetah (2022, Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh) and Project Dolphin (2020).
- India's National Wildlife Week is observed in the first week of October (2-8 October).
Other related days:
- World Animal Day: 4 October.
- International Tiger Day: 29 July.
- International Day for Biological Diversity: 22 May.
- World Elephant Day: 12 August.
Why not the other options?
- ✗4 October is World Animal Day.
- ✗29 July is International Tiger Day.
- ✗22 May is the International Day for Biological Diversity.
Quick tip
Remember: World Wildlife Day = 3 March (CITES signed 3 March 1973; UN day since 2013); India joined CITES in 1976; Wildlife Week = 2-8 October.
