Answer: Option D — 24 October
Detailed Solution
United Nations Day is celebrated every year on 24 October, the anniversary of the date in 1945 when the Charter of the United Nations came into force.
About the founding of the UN:
The UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco, USA, at the end of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, by representatives of 50 countries. Poland signed later, becoming the 51st founding member.
The Charter came into force on 24 October 1945, after it was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States (the five permanent members of the Security Council) and a majority of the other signatories.
In 1947, the UN General Assembly declared 24 October as United Nations Day. In 1971, it recommended that member states observe it as a public holiday.
India was one of the founding members: it signed the Charter on 26 June 1945, even before independence.
About the United Nations:
It replaced the League of Nations (1920-1946).
Its headquarters is in New York City, USA. Other main offices are in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi.
It has six principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Trusteeship Council (inactive since 1994), the International Court of Justice (at The Hague) and the Secretariat.
It has 193 member states; South Sudan (2011) was the most recent to join.
It has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
The current Secretary-General is António Guterres of Portugal (since 2017).
The term "United Nations" was first used by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the "Declaration by United Nations" (1 January 1942).
Other UN-related days:
- UN Charter Day: 26 June.
- Human Rights Day: 10 December (Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted, 1948).
- UN Peacekeepers' Day: 29 May.
Why not the other options?
- ✗26 June is the day the UN Charter was signed (1945).
- ✗10 December is Human Rights Day.
- ✗1 January 1942 is when the "Declaration by United Nations" was signed.
