World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 23 April

Detailed Solution

World Book and Copyright Day (also known as World Book Day) is celebrated every year on 23 April.

About the day:

  • It was established by UNESCO at its General Conference in Paris in 1995 and was first celebrated on 23 April 1996.
  • Its aim is to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.

Why 23 April:

The date is symbolic in world literature. On 23 April 1616, Miguel de Cervantes (Spain, author of "Don Quixote") and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (Peru) died, and William Shakespeare (England) died on 23 April 1616 according to the Julian calendar then used in England.

The date is also the birth or death anniversary of other writers.

The idea came from Catalonia, Spain, where on 23 April (Saint George's Day, or "La Diada de Sant Jordi"), people traditionally exchange books and roses.

World Book Capital:

  • Every year, UNESCO names a "World Book Capital" city, starting from 23 April, for one year, to promote books and reading.
  • The first World Book Capital was Madrid (2001).
  • Delhi was the World Book Capital in 2003.

About copyright:

  • Copyright protects original literary, artistic, musical and other creative works.
  • In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957, which has been amended several times, most notably in 2012.
  • In India, copyright for literary works generally lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years.

The Berne Convention (1886) is the main international agreement on copyright. It is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva.

World Intellectual Property Day is observed on 26 April.

Other related days:

  • International Literacy Day: 8 September.
  • International Children's Book Day: 2 April (Hans Christian Andersen's birthday).
  • International Dance Day: 29 April.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗8 September is International Literacy Day.
  • ✗29 April is International Dance Day.
  • ✗2 April is International Children's Book Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Book and Copyright Day = 23 April (UNESCO, 1995; death of Shakespeare and Cervantes in 1616); Delhi was World Book Capital 2003; World IP Day = 26 April.
