World Toilet Day is observed on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 19 November

Detailed Solution

World Toilet Day is observed every year on 19 November to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and to inspire action to provide safe toilets for everyone.

About World Toilet Day:

It was started in 2001 by the World Toilet Organization (WTO), a non-profit group founded in Singapore by Jack Sim, who is known as "Mr. Toilet". The organisation was founded on 19 November 2001.

In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared 19 November as World Toilet Day (resolution 67/291). It is coordinated by UN-Water.

It supports Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): "Clean water and sanitation for all by 2030".

Why it matters:

  • Billions of people around the world still lack access to safely managed sanitation.
  • Open defecation and poor sanitation spread diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid and polio, and they pollute water.
  • Lack of toilets especially affects the safety, health and dignity of women and girls.

Sanitation in India:

  • The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2 October 2014, Gandhi Jayanti, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Under it, over 100 million toilets were built in rural areas, and rural India was declared "Open Defecation Free" (ODF) on 2 October 2019, Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.
  • The second phase, Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II, focuses on ODF Plus: sustaining ODF status and managing solid and liquid waste.
  • The film "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" (2017) was about the need for toilets in villages.
  • Bindeshwar Pathak founded Sulabh International (1970), known for its public toilets.

Other days on 19 November:

  • International Men's Day.
  • National Integration Day (India): the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2 October is Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • ✗15 October is Global Handwashing Day.
  • ✗22 March is World Water Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Toilet Day = 19 November (World Toilet Organization 2001, Jack Sim; UN day since 2013; SDG 6); Swachh Bharat = 2 October 2014; World Water Day = 22 March.
