Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Jammu and Kashmir

Detailed Solution

The Chenani-Nashri Tunnel is located on National Highway 44 (the Jammu-Srinagar highway), in the Udhampur and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

About the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel:

  • It is about 9.2 km (9.28 km) long.
  • It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 April 2017.
  • At the time of its opening, it was India's longest road tunnel.

It was renamed the "Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel" in 2019.

It was built under the Lower Himalayan mountain range, at an altitude of about 1,200 metres.

It bypasses the snow-bound Patnitop area, which was often closed in winter because of snowfall and landslides.

It reduced the distance between Jammu and Srinagar by about 30 km and the travel time by about two hours.

It has two tubes: a main traffic tube and a parallel escape tube, connected by cross-passages at regular intervals.

It is India's first tunnel with a fully integrated tunnel control system, which automatically manages ventilation, fire safety, lighting, communication and surveillance.

It is also India's first road tunnel with a "transverse ventilation" system, in which fresh air is brought in and exhaust air is removed through separate ducts.

It was built by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Other important tunnels in the region:

  • Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel (Banihal-Qazigund): about 11.2 km long; opened in 2013.
  • Banihal-Qazigund Road Tunnel (Jawahar Tunnel's replacement): about 8.5 km; opened in 2021.
  • Jawahar Tunnel: an older road tunnel built in 1956.
  • Zojila Tunnel: under construction between Kashmir and Ladakh.
  • Atal Tunnel (Himachal Pradesh): about 9.02 km; opened in 2020; the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet.

Other infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir:

The Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, was inaugurated in June 2025.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Himachal Pradesh has the Atal Tunnel.
  • ✗Uttarakhand has the Silkyara tunnel project, where 41 workers were rescued in 2023.
  • ✗Arunachal Pradesh has the Sela Tunnel.

Quick tip

Remember: Chenani-Nashri Tunnel = J&K, on NH-44 (about 9.2 km; opened 2017; renamed after Syama Prasad Mookerjee; bypasses Patnitop); Atal Tunnel = Himachal (2020); Sela Tunnel = Arunachal (2024).
