Answer: Option C — Nepanagar, Madhya Pradesh
Detailed Solution
India's first newsprint mill, the National Newsprint and Paper Mills (NEPA Mills), was set up at Nepanagar, in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh.
About NEPA Mills:
It was established in 1947 as a private company, and it began producing newsprint in the mid-1950s.
It was later taken over by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and then by the Government of India. It is now a central public sector undertaking, "Nepa Limited", under the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The town of Nepanagar grew around the mill and was named after it ("NEPA" stands for National Newsprint and Paper).
It used bamboo and wood (such as salai) from the nearby forests of the Satpura region as raw material.
It faced losses for many years and was revived and modernised with government support.
What is newsprint:
- Newsprint is a low-cost, thin paper used mainly for printing newspapers.
- It is made mainly from mechanical wood pulp or recycled paper.
