Answer: Option B — Lohit
Detailed Solution
The Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, officially named the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, is built across the Lohit river, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra, in Assam. It connects Dhola in the Tinsukia district on the south bank with Sadiya on the north bank.
Key facts:
- Length: about 9.15 km.
- When it was opened, it was the longest bridge in India over water; it is now among the longest river bridges in the country.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 26 May 2017.
It is named after the famous Assamese singer, composer and filmmaker Bhupen Hazarika, who was born in Sadiya. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019.
Importance:
- It reduced travel time between Assam and eastern Arunachal Pradesh by several hours.
- It is strategically important, since it can carry heavy military vehicles, including tanks, towards the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.
- It has boosted trade and tourism in the region.
About the Lohit river:
- It rises in eastern Tibet (where it is called the Zayu river) and enters India in Arunachal Pradesh.
- Parshuram Kund, an important pilgrimage site where a fair is held on Makar Sankranti, is on its banks in Arunachal Pradesh.
- It joins the Siang (Dihang) and the Dibang near Sadiya to form the Brahmaputra.
Other long bridges:
- The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu), about 21.8 km, opened in January 2024, is India's longest sea bridge.
- The Bogibeel Bridge over the Brahmaputra is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge.
- The Mahatma Gandhi Setu over the Ganga at Patna.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Subansiri, Dibang and Siang are other rivers of the Brahmaputra system, but the Dhola-Sadiya bridge crosses the Lohit.
Quick tip
Remember: Dhola-Sadiya Bridge (Bhupen Hazarika Setu, about 9.15 km, 2017) = Lohit river, Assam; Atal Setu = longest sea bridge.
