Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Chenab

Detailed Solution

The Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, is built over the Chenab river near Kauri, in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Its deck is about 359 metres above the river bed, which is about 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Key facts:

  • Total length: about 1,315 metres.
  • Main arch span: about 467 metres.
  • It is built of steel and designed to withstand high winds of up to about 260 km per hour and strong earthquakes.
  • It has a design life of about 120 years.
  • It was built by Indian Railways, through Konkan Railway Corporation and Afcons Infrastructure, with international consultants.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 6 June 2025, along with the full Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).

The USBRL project:

  • The 272 km long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India's railway network.
  • It includes many tunnels and bridges; the Pir Panjal tunnel (about 11 km) and the T-50 tunnel (about 12.8 km, India's longest transport tunnel) are part of it.
  • Vande Bharat trains now run between Katra and Srinagar.
  • The Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, is also part of this line.

About the Chenab river:

  • It is formed by the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers at Tandi in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, where it is called the Chandrabhaga.
  • It flows through Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, cutting deep gorges, and enters Pakistan near Akhnoor.
  • It is one of the western rivers of the Indus system whose waters were allotted mainly to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty.
  • Projects such as Salal, Baglihar, Dulhasti and Ratle are built or being built on it.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Jhelum flows through the Kashmir Valley.
  • ✗The Tawi flows past Jammu city.
  • ✗The Indus flows through Ladakh.

Quick tip

Remember: Chenab Bridge (Reasi, J&K) = world's highest railway arch bridge (about 359 m), opened 6 June 2025 as part of the USBRL.
