Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Mumbai

Detailed Solution

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), also known as Nhava Sheva, is located at Navi Mumbai, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, across the harbour from Mumbai.

About the Jawaharlal Nehru Port:

  • It was commissioned on 26 May 1989 to reduce the pressure on the old Mumbai Port.
  • It is now managed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), under the Major Port Authorities Act, 2021.
  • It is one of the busiest container ports in India and handles a large share of the country's container traffic.
  • It was the first major port in India to become a "100 per cent landlord port", in which the port authority owns the land and infrastructure while private operators run the terminals.
  • It is connected to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, which will link it to north India.
  • It has a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for port-based industries.
  • It is named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.

New port nearby:

The Vadhavan Port, a deep-sea port being developed in the Palghar district of Maharashtra by JNPA and the Maharashtra Maritime Board, will be one of the largest ports in India. Its foundation stone was laid in August 2024.

About India's ports:

  • India has a coastline of about 7,500 km (recently re-measured as about 11,098 km).
  • It has 12 "major ports" under the central government's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, plus many non-major ports under state governments.
  • The major ports on the west coast are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mormugao (Goa), New Mangalore and Kochi.

The major ports on the east coast are Syama Prasad Mookerjee (Kolkata, with Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar (Ennore), Chennai and V. O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin).

Mundra Port (Gujarat), run by the Adani Group, is India's largest private port.

Kolkata is India's only riverine major port.

Visakhapatnam is the deepest landlocked and protected port.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Chennai has the Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port.
  • ✗Kolkata has the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, a riverine port.
  • ✗Visakhapatnam has a natural harbour on the east coast.

Quick tip

Remember: Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) = Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra (1989; major container port; first 100 per cent landlord port); Vadhavan = new deep-sea port in Palghar; Mundra = largest private port.
