Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Chandigarh

Detailed Solution

The Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport is the airport serving Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana. It is located near Mohali, partly in Punjab and partly in Chandigarh.

About the airport:

  • Its new terminal was opened in 2015.
  • In 2022, it was renamed "Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport", and the new name was formally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 September 2022, the 115th birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh.
  • The airport is jointly managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the governments of Punjab and Haryana.

About Bhagat Singh (1907-1931):

  • He was born on 28 September 1907 at Banga, in the Lyallpur district of Punjab (now in Pakistan).
  • He was deeply affected by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (1919).
  • He joined the Hindustan Republican Association, which was reorganised as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in 1928.

To avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, who died after a police lathi charge during the protest against the Simon Commission, he and Rajguru shot dead the British police officer J. P. Saunders in Lahore in December 1928.

On 8 April 1929, he and Batukeshwar Dutt threw harmless smoke bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi and raised the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad", to protest against repressive laws. They did not try to escape.

He wrote the essay "Why I Am an Atheist" (1930) in jail.

He, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged in Lahore jail on 23 March 1931. This day is observed as "Shaheed Diwas".

His memorial is at Hussainiwala, in the Ferozepur district of Punjab, on the banks of the Sutlej.
