Answer: Option A — National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust
Detailed Solution
NICDIT stands for the "National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust".
About NICDIT:
- It was approved by the Union Cabinet in December 2016, by expanding and renaming the earlier "Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project Implementation Trust Fund".
- It works under the administrative control of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- It is the apex body for the coordinated and unified development of all industrial corridors in India.
- Its implementing company is the "National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation" (NICDC), earlier called the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC).
Its role:
- To approve and appraise projects, and to oversee the development of industrial corridors and "smart cities" along them.
- To provide funds for infrastructure such as roads, water supply, power and logistics in the industrial areas.
About the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme:
India has 11 industrial corridors planned in four phases, such as the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC), Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC), East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC) and others.
They are being developed along the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) of the Railways.
Greenfield industrial cities already developed include:
- Dholera Special Investment Region (Gujarat): India's first greenfield smart industrial city; the country's first semiconductor fabrication plant (Tata-PSMC) is being built there.
- Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area, AURIC (Aurangabad, now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra).
- Integrated Industrial Township, Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh).
- Vikram Udyogpuri (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh).
- In August 2024, the Union Cabinet approved 12 new industrial smart cities in ten states, at a cost of about 28,600 crore rupees.
- The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (2021) is used for planning these corridors.
Related abbreviations:
- DMIC: Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
- DFC: Dedicated Freight Corridor.
- DPIIT: Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
Why not the other options?
- ✗"National Infrastructure and Corridor Development Investment Trust" is not the correct expansion.

- ✗"National Integrated Corridor Development and Infrastructure Trust" is not the correct expansion.
Quick tip
Remember: NICDIT = National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (2016; DPIIT; apex body for 11 industrial corridors; implementing agency NICDC); Dholera = first greenfield smart industrial city; 12 new industrial cities approved in 2024.
