Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Beijing, China

Detailed Solution

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has its headquarters in Beijing, China.

About the AIIB:

  • It was proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2013.
  • In October 2014, 21 Asian countries, including India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up the bank.
  • Its Articles of Agreement were signed in June 2015, and the bank began operations on 16 January 2016.
  • It has about 110 approved members from Asia and other regions.
  • China is the largest shareholder, with about 26 per cent of the voting power, which gives it a veto over major decisions (which need a 75 per cent majority).

India is the second-largest shareholder, with about 7.6 per cent of the voting power. Russia is the third-largest.

The USA and Japan are not members.

Its first President was Jin Liqun of China (2016-2025). Zou Jiayi of China became President in January 2026.

Its motto is "Lean, Clean and Green".

Its aims:

  • To finance infrastructure projects in Asia and beyond, in areas like energy, transport, water, telecommunications and urban development.
  • To promote regional connectivity and sustainable development.

India and the AIIB:

  • India is a founding member.
  • India is the largest borrower from the AIIB, with loans for projects such as metro rail systems (for example, Bengaluru and Mumbai), rural roads, power transmission and water supply.
  • India hosted the third annual meeting of the AIIB in Mumbai in June 2018.

Other development banks:

New Development Bank (NDB): Shanghai; set up by the BRICS countries; India's K. V. Kamath was its first President.

Asian Development Bank: Mandaluyong, Philippines (1966).

World Bank: Washington, D.C. (1944).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Shanghai has the headquarters of the New Development Bank (BRICS).
  • ✗Singapore is a member but not the headquarters.
  • ✗Hong Kong is not the headquarters.

Quick tip

Remember: AIIB = Beijing (operations from 16 January 2016; China largest shareholder, India second-largest and largest borrower; USA and Japan not members); New Development Bank = Shanghai; ADB = Manila.

This topic covers international economic and financial organisations: the IMF, the World Bank group, the WTO, the Asian Development Bank, the New Development Bank, the AIIB, OPEC, the OECD and groupings such as the G20, along with their headquarters, founding and functions. Questions usually ask where an organisation is headquartered, when it was set up, and what it does. For example, the IMF and World Bank were created at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944, the WTO replaced GATT in 1995, and the New Development Bank, set up by the BRICS countries, is headquartered in Shanghai. Practise the international economic organisations questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
