The Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant is located in:
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Karnataka
Detailed Solution
The Kaiga Generating Station (Kaiga Atomic Power Station) is located at Kaiga, in the Uttara Kannada (Karwar) district of Karnataka, on the banks of the Kali river.
About the Kaiga Generating Station:
- It is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
- It has four Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) of 220 MW each, with a total capacity of 880 MW.
- Unit 1 began commercial operation in 2000, and the other units followed between 2000 and 2011.
- The reactors are indigenously designed and built, and they use natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant.
In December 2018, Kaiga Unit 1 set a world record for the longest continuous operation of a nuclear power reactor, running for 962 days without a break. This was a major achievement for India's indigenous nuclear technology.
Two more units of 700 MW each (Kaiga 5 and 6) are being built at the site.
The plant is located in a thickly forested area of the Western Ghats, and environmental groups had raised concerns about its impact on the forest and on the Kali river.
During construction, in 1994, part of the inner containment dome of one of the reactors collapsed. It was rebuilt with improved design.
About the Kali river:
- It rises in the Western Ghats in Karnataka and flows west into the Arabian Sea near Karwar.
- It has several dams, such as Supa, Kadra and Kodasalli.
- The Kali Tiger Reserve (formerly Dandeli-Anshi) is located in the same district.
About Karwar:
- It is home to INS Kadamba, one of India's largest naval bases, being developed under "Project Seabird".
- Rabindranath Tagore stayed in Karwar in 1882; a beach there is named after him.
Other nuclear power stations in India:
Tarapur (Maharashtra), Rawatbhata (Rajasthan), Kalpakkam and Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu), Narora (Uttar Pradesh) and Kakrapar (Gujarat).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Kerala does not have a nuclear power plant.
- ✗Maharashtra has the Tarapur plant and a planned plant at Jaitapur.
- ✗Goa does not have a nuclear power plant.
Quick tip
Remember: Kaiga = Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, on the Kali river (4 x 220 MW PHWRs; world record of 962 days of continuous operation by Unit 1, 2018); Kudankulam = largest; Tarapur = first.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
