Answer: Option C — Raniganj, West Bengal
Detailed Solution
Coal mining in India began in 1774 in the Raniganj coalfield, in the present-day Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, along the Damodar river.
About the beginning of coal mining in India:
In 1774, John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company were granted permission to mine coal in the Raniganj area.
Commercial coal mining grew slowly at first. It expanded greatly after 1853, when steam railways were introduced in India and needed large amounts of coal.
Raniganj was the main coalfield of India for many years.
About the Raniganj coalfield:
- It lies in the Damodar valley and extends into Jharkhand.
- Its coal is of the Gondwana type, formed about 250 million years ago (Permian period).
- It is one of the largest coalfields in India.
Coal in India:
Most of India's coal (about 98 per cent) is Gondwana coal, found mainly in the Damodar, Mahanadi, Godavari and Son river valleys. The rest is Tertiary coal, found in the north-east (for example, Assam and Meghalaya).
Jharkhand has the largest coal reserves in India, followed by Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Jharia (Jharkhand) is the largest coking coal field in India, and is known for its underground fires.
Major coalfields include Jharia, Bokaro, Raniganj, Talcher (Odisha), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh) and Singareni (Telangana).
India is the world's second-largest producer and consumer of coal, after China. Its annual coal production crossed one billion tonnes in 2024-25.
Coal is the main source of India's electricity.
Nationalisation:
The coal industry was nationalised in two phases: coking coal mines in 1971-72 and non-coking coal mines in 1973.
Coal India Limited (CIL) was formed in 1975. Its headquarters is in Kolkata.
Singareni Collieries Company Limited (Telangana) is a joint venture of the Telangana government and the Central government.
Other "firsts" in Indian industry:
- First oil well: Digboi, Assam (oil struck in 1889).
- First cotton mill: Bombay (1854).
- First jute mill: Rishra, West Bengal (1855).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Jharia, Jharkhand, is the largest coking coal field.
- ✗Talcher, Odisha, is a major coalfield.
- ✗Singareni, Telangana, is a major coalfield in south India.
Quick tip
Remember: first coal mining in India = Raniganj, West Bengal (1774; Sumner and Heatly of the East India Company); largest coal reserves = Jharkhand; Jharia = coking coal; Coal India = 1975, Kolkata.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
