Answer: Option C — Uttar Pradesh
Detailed Solution
The Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS) is located at Narora, in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Ganga river.
About the Narora Atomic Power Station:
- It is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a public sector company under the Department of Atomic Energy.
- It has two Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), each with a capacity of 220 megawatts (MW), giving a total capacity of 440 MW.
- The first unit began commercial operation in 1991 and the second in 1992.
- It uses natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as both moderator and coolant.
- It was the first Indian nuclear power station to use a standardised 220 MW PHWR design with improved safety features, which became the model for later Indian reactors.
- It is located in an area of seismic activity, so special earthquake-resistant designs were used.
In 1993, a fire broke out in the turbine building of one unit. The reactor was safely shut down, and the incident led to improved fire safety measures across Indian nuclear plants.
Narora is also known as a site of the Ganga river where the Narora Barrage was built.
The Upper Ganga stretch from Brijghat to Narora was declared a Ramsar site in 2005. It is known for Gangetic river dolphins.
About India's nuclear power programme:
India's first nuclear power plant was the Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra (1969). It uses Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) supplied by the USA.
The Madras Atomic Power Station is at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. Kalpakkam also has the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), part of the second stage of the nuclear programme.
India follows a three-stage nuclear power programme designed by Homi J. Bhabha, aiming to eventually use its large thorium reserves.
NPCIL was set up in 1987.
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), set up in 1983, oversees nuclear safety.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bihar does not have a nuclear power plant.
- ✗Uttarakhand does not have a nuclear power plant.
- ✗West Bengal does not have an operating nuclear power plant.
Quick tip
Remember: Narora Atomic Power Station = Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on the Ganga (2 x 220 MW PHWRs; NPCIL; 1991-92); first nuclear plant = Tarapur, Maharashtra (1969); PFBR = Kalpakkam.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
