Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — January 1972

Detailed Solution

The Amar Jawan Jyoti ("Flame of the Immortal Soldier") was established beneath the arch of India Gate in New Delhi as a memorial to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 26 January 1972, on the 23rd Republic Day.

The memorial consisted of a black marble plinth (cenotaph) with an inverted L1A1 self-loading rifle topped by a soldier's helmet, with the words "Amar Jawan" inscribed on it. An eternal flame burned there day and night, guarded by soldiers of the three services. For many years, Prime Ministers and visiting dignitaries laid wreaths there on Republic Day and other occasions.

India Gate itself is a war memorial built by the British. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it was completed in 1931. It honours about 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War (1914-1918) and the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919). The names of more than 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on it.

On 21 January 2022, the flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti was merged with the eternal flame at the National War Memorial, located nearby. The National War Memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 February 2019. It honours more than 25,000 Indian soldiers who have died in wars and operations since Independence, including those in 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971 and Kargil (1999). Its design includes four concentric circles called the Amar Chakra, Veerta Chakra, Tyag Chakra and Rakshak Chakra.

In 2022, a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was installed under the canopy near India Gate, and Rajpath was renamed Kartavya Path.
