Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1969

Detailed Solution

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was set up on 10 March 1969 under an Act of Parliament, the Central Industrial Security Force Act, passed shortly before.

Why the CISF was set up:

  • After independence, many large public sector industries, such as steel plants, refineries and power stations, were set up.
  • These important installations needed protection against theft, sabotage and other threats.
  • The CISF was created to provide better security to public sector undertakings.

Growth of the force:

  • It started with only three battalions.
  • It was made an armed force of the Union in 1983.
  • It is now one of the largest Central Armed Police Forces.

Role of the CISF:

  • It provides security to public sector undertakings, such as steel plants, oil refineries, power plants and mines.
  • It guards airports across India, a role it took over after the hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft to Kandahar in 1999.
  • It protects the Delhi Metro and other metro networks.
  • It guards important government buildings, nuclear installations, space centres, seaports and heritage monuments.
  • It provides security to some private sector units on a payment basis.
  • It provides VIP security to certain protected persons.

Fire wing:

The CISF has a fire service wing, which is one of the largest fire-fighting organisations in India.

Parliament security:

In recent years, the CISF has been given responsibility for security in the Parliament complex.

Control:

  • It is under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Its headquarters is in New Delhi.

Training:

Its National Industrial Security Academy is located at Hyderabad.

Motto:

Its motto is "Protection and Security".

CISF Raising Day:

10 March is observed as CISF Raising Day.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1949, 1962 and 1984 do not match the year the CISF was set up.

Quick tip

Membership and leadership change over time, so pair the static facts here with current affairs for recent changes such as new members or new heads. Practise the organisations and headquarters questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
